Stones, metal wood and wax, clay tables, papyrus etc. were used instead
of paper.

Egyptians - wrote on paper made of flattened papyrus. They made ink from charcoal,
mixed with water and glue.

Later on people made parchment from animal skins.

It was better than papyrus as they
could write on both sides.
5.
The Chinese invented paper made from the bark of Mulberry trees.
6.
Monks in monasteries who learned how to write were called scribes.
