Food preservation
The process of treating
food in a way that preserves its value for long time is called
food preservation.
Food can be preserved by
the following methods:
Keeping
in refrigerator -
The low temperature does not allow germs to grow fast.
Canning – Some
items such as juices and jams come in cans. They are sealed in cans after removing
the germs and moisture from them.
Drying (dehydration) – Food
is dried or dehydrated to preserve it. For example, red chilies, mint
leaves etc.
Boiling -
Boiling kills the germs in it. So, milk can be stored for a longer time.
Pickling -
Preservatives like salt, sugar and oil are added to certain foods to slow down
the growth of germs.
Pickles are made by
adding salt and oil.
Jams and jellies have
sugar in them.
Adding preservatives
to food makes it last for a long time.
