`UNIT -3
ANIMALS
FOOD CHAIN

1) What is a food chain?

Ans: A food chain shows how each living thing gets food, and how nutrients and energy are passed from creature to creature. Food chains begin with plant-life, and end with animal-life. Some animals eat plants, some animals eat other animals. A simple food chain could start with grass, which is eaten by rabbits.

2) Define:

a) Producer: Producer is the one who makes its own food.

b) Consumer: Consumer is the one who cannot make its own food.

c) Decomposers: A decomposer is an organism that feeds on dead organisms and the waste products of other organisms. Decomposers help nutrients cycle back into the ecosystem. Some examples of decomposers are insects, earthworms and bacteria.

3) Name the three types of consumer?

Ans: a) Herbivores (Herbivores are animals that eat only plants eg: cattle, deer, donkey, zebra, yak, giraffe etc…)

         b) Omnivores (An omnivore is a kind of animal that eats food from both animals or plants. eg: dogs, rats, squrrels, bear, pigs etc…)

         c) Carnivores.( A carnivore is an animal that gets food from killing and eating other animals. Carnivores generally eat herbivores, but can eat omnivores eg: Tiger, lion, cheetah, foxes, polar bears, crocodile etc...)
