The
Skeletal System:
When you are born you have almost 300 bones in your body but by the time you
grow up there are 206 bones in your body. This is because some of the bones
fuse together and become one as you grow up. The framework of 206 bones in an
adult human body is called the skeletal system. The skeleton keeps the body in
proper shape. The bones have a network of blood vessels and nerves. There is a
soft portion inside the bone called the bone marrow, where the blood cells are
produced.
The
Bone:
A bone is the hard tissue in the body. It is a store house of calcium,
phosphorous and other important minerals needed by our body. They also produce
blood for the body. The largest bone in our body is the pelvis or hip bone. In
fact it is made of six bones joined firmly together. The longest bone is the
'femur', which is present in the thigh. It is also called as the thigh
bone. It makes up almost one quarter of
the body's total height.
The smallest bone is the 'stirrup',
deep in the ear. It is hardly larger than a grain of rice.
