Joint
of the bones:
The bones are joined together to
perform different functions like:
1.
Connecting the bones together.
2.
Helping the skeleton to move.
The joints in our body are of two
types:
1. Immovable joints: The bones having
these joints do not move at all. They are seen in the skull.
2. Movable joints: The bones having these joints move freely. There
are four main types of movable joints.
i) Pivot Joint: A ring rotates around a pivot. This joint
allows movements in all directions. In this joint one bone rotates around the
other bone. Example: the joint between the skull and the spine in the neck
region.
ii) Ball and socket Joint: The end of one bone has a ball shape to it.
It fits into the end of another bone that has a round hollow in it that looks
like a cup. This joint allows movement in all directions. Example: the shoulder
joint and the hip joint.
iii) Hinge Joint: The end of one bone is rounded and it fits
into a depression in the other bone. The movement of this joint is like a door
hinge. Example: In the elbow and knee joints.
